The Magic Trains:
1.) Had a great time in Fitness and completed an obstacle course. We also worked on kicking a soccer ball into the net to make a goal.
2.) Practiced addition and subtraction during Math by using our plastic Teddy bears for manipulatives. Students had to write the problems in their notebooks.
3.) Practiced songs that we will sing with Deanna at The Hebrew Home next Friday. Of course we started Music by singing “The More We Sing Together”. We also sang their favorite “Thomas and Friends” theme song and the kids played instruments while they sang.
The Diener Dinosaurs:
What a brief but terrific Thursday! Today the Diener Dinosaurs...
1.) Had fitness with Mr. Dan! We went through an obstacle course, played 'What time is it, Mr. Fox?', and practiced kicking soccer goals using the sides of our feet!
2.) Learned about different states of matter in science. Then we started an experiment with ice cubes - we're going to see if they freeze in the refrigerator or the freezer and then we're going to see what happens when we leave them out in the classroom. We're recording our predictions in our lab books!
3.) Had music with Miss Deanna! We continued to work on telling stories using only music.
The Mighty Dieners:
We are back and energized after two snow days and a two hour delay!
1.) We had a great morning with Ms. Kathy! We worked on our handwriting and then did some activities with bean bags. We had to listen to music and following the directions which worked on coordination and right/left discrimination.
2.) In Music, we used the drums to make animal footprint sounds! In Drama, we played the “VRROOOM” game and practiced character walking!
3.) Sadly, after two days out of school, most of our flowers died! BUT, we examined the flowers and discussed why we thought they might have died.
The Golden Owls:
Today in the Golden Owls we had a great day!
1.) We began our day with fitness. Coach Dan was here to help us master our sit ups. We also began learning how to properly kick a soccer ball!
2.) In math, we continued working on subtraction and minus two. We did math mania and we played a fun game using a deck of cards, reinforcing our subtraction and addition facts!
3.) In science we prepared for our science fair reviewing the definitions of magnetism, hypothesis and electricity. We cannot wait for next Tuesday!

The Magic Trains:
1.) Worked in their “Explode the Code” books during Language Arts. They also read stories called “Two Baskets” and “Pam and Sam”.
2.) Put shapes together to make a picture with Ms. Kathy by using “Playful Patterns”. Then the students played “Wild Woods” with Ms. Seena. All the animals made it to shelter before the thunderstorm arrived.
3.) Planted grass seeds for a science project. We will give regular water to one of our plants and sugar water to the other plant.
4.) Read a story called “Quick as a Cricket” by Audrey Wood at the end of the day.
The Diener Dinosaurs:
What a magnificent Monday! Today the Diener Dinosaurs...
1.) Went on a scavenger hunt for things that start with the letter 'L' in The Diener School! Then we used stamps to create pictures and spell words that begin with 'L'.
2.) Had Social Skills with Miss Melissa! We learned about listening and then we played games that helped us practice our listening skills, including Operator and Simon Says.
3.) Learned about magnetism in science! We watched a video about magnets, then we picked a variety of materials from around the room to test with our magnets.
The Mighty Dieners:
1.) In Math, we added a SNOW picture to our weather calendars! Then we finished answering our January Calendar questions!
2.) In Fitness, after we did our warm-ups (jumping jacks, push-ups and sit-ups, etc) we ran through an obstacle course. Then we played a number activity game! We picked a number, counted the number cards until we found the number and then had to complete the activity on the card!
3.) In the afternoon we continued to prepare for our Science Fair presentations! We analyzed what happened to our flowers over the weekend and wrote down/drew pictures of our observations.
The Golden Owls:
1.) In O. T. with Ms. Kathy we continue to work on our fine motor skills and visual motor skills. During our morning work we are including ocular motor activities that focus on our visual scanning and visual perception skills. In addition, the students participated in Charades, focusing on motor planning and body awareness.
2.) We began with math mania today. Each student was given one minute to see how many problems they could get correct. We will continue for the next few weeks in subtraction. We graph our results daily to see and realize our growth and progress.
3.) In writing we are breaking back into small groups. Ms. Maisie works with the girls and Mr. Paul works with the boys. We are working on topic sentences and supporting details. We then come together as a class and share. This gives us an opportunity to work on public speaking, eye contact, posture, and most importantly build confidence.

The Magic Trains:
1.) The Magic Trains had a fabulous Friday. We went outside to do a fun science experiment. We dropped Mentos candies into a two liter bottle of Diet Coke. We discovered the soda eruption was much higher when we added 4 Mentos than when we added one or two. The foam rapidly spewed into the air.
2.) We also practiced our handwriting skills with Ms. Brooke. We focused on the letters “E” and “F”.
3.) Danielle shared a library book with the class called Whose Shoes? Everyone had to guess to whom each shoe belonged.
4.) Finally, we loved playing outside on the hill and the playground on this beautiful sunny day.
HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!!
The Diener Dinosaurs:
Had a Fabulous time at the Maryland Science Center in Baltimore! Ask us about our trip…
The Mighty Dieners:
1.) In Brain gym, we energized our brain and body by doing animal walks, calf-pumps and cross-high-fives!
2.) In Art, we learned about a famous artist named Piet Mondrian, an abstract painter who used a lot of lines, shapes and primary colors.
3.) In Science, we worked more on our flower experiment. So far, our past experiment has showed great scientific changes! One rose has started blooming with blue spots! Another rose has turned a pinkish-red! The carnations have barely changed, except for a few blue spots!
4.) Today, we started with brand new white flowers and changed some of the variables in the experiment. We made sure each cup had exactly the same amount of water and drops of food coloring. We also added sugar in one cup and salt in another cup.
The Golden Owls:
1.) In L.A. we created a K-W-L chart. What we Know, what we Want to know, and what we Learned. We discussed celebrations, cultures, and kinds of food. We learned that the harvest season is celebrated around the world and in different ways.
2.) For O.T. we got out of our seats and did several brain gym activities. We worked on crossing our midline and also our fine motor skills.
3.) Today we observed the working environment of Smathers and Branson. The class was separated into pairs and got to shadow a few of the workers. They recognized professionalism and the daily tasks that go with starting and running a business.

4.) Learned the words to our favorite theme song from “Thomas the Train” in Music class with Ms. Deanna.
The Diener Dinosaurs:
What a terrific Thursday! Today the Diener Dinosaurs...
1.) Read a book together called 'Moondogs' and each made predictions about what would happen in the book by looking at the cover. All of our predictions turned out to be correct!
2.) Drew a sequencing picture of our Moondogs book and labeled our first, middle, and last illustrations with full sentences. We practiced using spaces between our words, capital letters at the beginning of our sentences, and punctuation at the end.
3.) Talked about our field trip to the Science Museum tomorrow! We are really excited to see all of the wonderful things there - we even drew pictures there predicting what our favorite parts would be! We are all looking forward to seeing the human body exhibits and some of us are hoping for dinosaur exhibits, as well.
JUST A REMINDER - Please send in lunch and TWO small snacks tomorrow as we will be gone all day. Thank you!
The Mighty Dieners:
1.) In Fitness, we practiced bowling and we learned the game Red-Rover! We had a lot of fun. After Fitness, we each drew a picture of what we did in Fitness and labeled our pictures.
2.) In Math, we added our weather pictures to our weather calendars and concluded we have had a lot of sunny days in January!
3.) With Ms. Kathy, we worked on handwriting using our Handwriting Without Tears books. We also worked on visual discrimination. We had to look at rows of pictures and figure out which image was different. Some images focused on a missing piece of the picture (an apple with no stem), some pictures worked on directionality (left or right, up or down).
The Golden Owls:
1.) In Language Arts we are building reading comprehension using several strategies and the 5 W's. We are also rereading and asking ourselves questions as we read. In groups we are increasing our fluency and expression as readers.
2.) In speech we discussed the exciting week in politics! We worked hard to "stretch our thinking" and brainstorm about what we would do if we were elected president of the USA or president of the Diener School. We organized our thoughts and made educated predictions about what will happen!
3.) We are currently in our laboratories preparing for our science fair. We are experimenting with electricity and magnetism.

1.) We started our letters to President-elect Obama. We will be giving them to our friend, Officer Terence, who took us on a tour of the White House, to try and give them to President Obama after the Inauguration! We drew pictures during Art to go with our letters.
2.) In Math, we added today’s weather picture to our weather calendars and graphed this week’s weather! We then split into groups and worked on different math activities. Some worked on coloring numbers that were before/after a given number, sorting groups of objects and graphing them, or adding 1 more to a number.
3.) In Language Arts, we worked in our Explode the Code books!
The Golden Owls:
1.) We worked on partner letters addressing Barack Obama. Our friend Terrance in the White House will try to pass these letters to our new President.
2.) For O.T. we did a few brain gym activities as well as fine motor circuits fulfilling the multi sensory aspect of The Diener School.
3.) Mrs. Feinberg our Art teacher was unfortunately out today. So we worked on a Team art project. We grouped students together giving them the opportunity to communicate constructively while also using their creativity.

3.) Had our first experience as official scientists today! We took our magnifying glasses and investigated our classroom using our 5 senses. Then we drew a picture and wrote about our experiences in our lab books.
The Mighty Dieners:
1.) We had a great time in Social Skills with Ms. Melissa! We learned all about feelings (sad, happy, mad, bored, etc.) by each student singing “Happy Birthday” to the class using a tone that would represent a different feeling. When they were done singing, the class would guess which feeling they were expressing when singing. Examples: When a student was singing, showing a happy feeling, they were smiling and using a cheery voice. Or, when a student was singing and acting mad, the singer was singing fast, with a mean face and showed they didn’t care about being nice by walking around the room.
2.) In Speech with Ms. Jen, we played a game called ‘Pronoun Parties’, where we had to identify the pronouns (boy, girl, her, his, etc).
3.) We played a game of ABC Animals. One student starts with the letter ‘A’ and names an animal that starts with ‘A’. When they were done, they picked a friend and told them the next letter in the alphabet and asked them to name an animal.
The Golden Owls:
1.) In Science with Ms. Melissa, we learned about the five senses. We touched things like orange peels, and lotion, we smelled things like clam juice and chocolate syrup, and smelled different spices with our noses. We talked about taste buds and how they live on our tongues and help us to taste our food, and lastly, we discussed sight and sound.
2.) In Social Skills with Ms. Melissa we talked about emotions. We played a game called ‘Guess the Emotion’, where as the student was reciting the song "Happy Birthday to You", in an emotion, like shy. The others had to guess what feeling the child was acting out. We are going to work on using our words to express how we feel when things happen to us.
3.) After Reading the book Mount Rushmore as a class we began our own carving exercise. We used soap, knives, spoons, and other classroom utensils to create a person of our choosing.

Today the Diener Dinosaurs…
1.) Had a great time catching up and sharing our break experiences with our friends during morning meeting!
2.) Read a book about feelings and then talked about our feelings with each other during Social Skills.
3.) Went ‘fishing’ with Miss Jen ~ we fished out pictures of people doing different things and then described them to each other using the appropriate pronouns!4.) Read a book together called ‘The Magic Schoolbus – Lost in the Solar System’! Then we drew pictures of what happened in the beginning, middle, and end of the story.
The Mighty Dieners:
During our morning meeting we talked about our fun and relaxing breaks and agreed we are very excited to be back at school!
1.) Also during our morning meeting, we discussed resolutions and each came up with a school resolution that we want to work on! (Parents will be sent the resolutions with their student’s updates later in the month.)
2.) In Math, we started our January Calendar Math, and changed our classroom calendar to show that we not only started a new month, but it is now a new year—2009!!
3.) In Fitness, we played a Bulldozer game where we knocked over cones and a game called “Beamo” where we tossed bean bags.
4.) We worked on handwriting today, practicing our numbers and letter formations!
The Golden Owls:
1.) In. L.A. we began a few new short stories continuing to utilize our comprehension strategies; picturing, thinking aloud, predicting, and connecting.
2.) In Math the kids were given one minute to see how many problems they could complete on a math worksheet. We then corrected each other’s paper and graphed our results. We will be doing this on a daily basis, comparing our results throughout the week.
3.) In Writing we are beginning to revise. We will also be working on our brainstorming and drafting. HAPPY NEW YEAR
From the Office:
Happy New Year!!
Today the Magic Trains…
1.) Identified different feelings with Ms. Melissa during our Social Skills lesson. We read the book “Wemberly Worried” and talked about what it means to worry about something.
2.) Worked on reading words from a short story called “Go Animals Go”. Danielle and Trevor read sight words together.
3.) Learned about the concept of top, middle and bottom through hands-on activities. They used their bodies to get in order and identify which person was in the middle. They also used different colored cubes to identify which cube was in the middle.
The Diener Dinosaurs:
What a marvelous Monday!
